This widely distributed species has a wealth of uses and has for centuries been employed by the Xhosa people of South Africa as a natural disinfectant while Masai tribes of Kenya harnessed its powerful and distinctly fruity aroma to preserve and flavour meat. In Western households, Zinziba has found just as many interesting uses in treating asthma, bronchitis and fevers and in speeding up recovery after illness. As a natural emollient, Zinziba creams and essential oils soothe and nourish dry, irritable skin.
Found in the remote mountainous regions of the Cape, this chamomile has been used in native house cleansing rituals and traditional African "muthi" [medicine] for centuries. The deep blue oil extracted from this plant has been hailed for its stress relieving, antidepressant and sedative properties. But this particular chamomile, also has a range of therapeutic uses, including the treatment of skin ailments, allergies, sunburn, the improvement of blood circulation and relieving premenstrual symptoms.
